What is thermal printing?

Thermal printing is an ink-free form of printing. It utilizes heat to create an image on the heat sensitive labels.

How does it work?

Rather than ink, the printer uses a printhead full of heating elements. The elements turn on and off to create the image. Direct thermal labels are heat sensitive and turn black in response to the heat from the printhead.

What can you label?

Basically anything. Some examples include:

  • Boxes and envelopes for shipping
  • Seed starts/pots
  • Pot stakes
  • Packaged meat
  • Egg cartons
  • Mason jars or other glass food jars
  • Candles
  • Price tags for clothing and accessories
  • Bottles of any kind including for lotions, oils, honey, and sauces

Why use thermal printing?

Thermal printing offers:

  • Faster printing speeds.
  • Better printing quality giving labels sharper lines, clearer images, and darker blacks.
  • Label durability - no ink means labels are immediately water, oil, and smudge resistant.
  • Lower cost per label compared to ink printed labels and cost improves with volume.

Are there any downsides to thermal printed labels?

Thermal printing is great for almost any application. A couple notes to make sure you select the right printer:

1. Direct thermal printers can ONLY print in black and white, which works for a majority of applications. If color is required then please submit a Quote Request. We will be happy to go over some alternatives.

2. Direct thermal labels are heat sensitive which means that heat from any source can discolor them over time, even sunlight. If you have a really harsh environment where heat exposure is a concern then please submit a Quote Request and Tradition Labels can make a label recommendation.
